 UPCOMING APAS MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Check out our events page for details and complete listing of meetings and events

May 10 - Migratory Bird Day - This is a fun-filled day greeting all the returning birds. Our location is Bedford County where we separate into teams and scour the county for as many species as possible. We meet back at the Wetlands where we tally and eat. If you have never participated in this outing, it’s a great way to learn your species and see them in their colorful new spring molts. Call Rosemary McGlynn or Tom and Sally Dick. (Please contact us a full week prior to the event since many of us will be away the week before.)
May 15...  APAS Meeting. Spring skies by Jack Beuthin of the Earth and Planetary Department at UPJ. This will be our first classroom introduction to astronomy and it will be a fun-filled educational introduction to our Spring skies.  We've had a speaker substitution for the May 15 meeting.  The new speaker is Steve Lindberg who teaches Astronomy at UPJ.  He'll still be speaking on learning the spring/summer night sky.  He suggests that people bring their binoculars.  If the night is clear and it gets dark enough, we'll do some basic stargazing outside at the end of his talk.
Date TBA - Astronomy Field Trip by Jack Beuthin - This will be a hands-on field trip to practice what you learned from Jack during the lecture. Since we need clear skies, the date and location will be announced at the May 15 meeting.
May 28 - Spring Shore Birds at Dunnings Creek Wetlands - Depending on the migration, other dates will also be considered. We draw down Bittern Pool by several inches to lure shorebirds from their migration. Over the years, we’ve had 22 species of shorebirds.

The latest edition of the Chickadee Chatter, (February 2008), is now available in pdf format.  Also APAS events scheduled for Spring and Summer 2008 have been listed.  Click here to go to our Events and Newsletter page to download the newsletter and see our events.

Our Spring/Summer edition of the newsletter is being developed.  If you want to contribute articles, announcements or any other submissions to this upcoming issue, email your submissions to the Newsletter's editor.

The Spring Raptor Migration Count has ended for this year.  See you all in the fall.

The Spring, 2008, Allegheny Front Hawk Watch season begins February 23 and ends May 7.

A gallery has been set up for APAS Members to share and comment on picts.  Click here to go to the APAS Gallery.   APAS members can create their own galleries and comment on pictures by becoming a gallery member.  It is free.  All you have to do is email the webmaster with your name, and the username and password you want for the gallery.  I will send you a confirmation note with a password to get you started.

In an effort to improve communications between members, we are developing an email service to alert you of hapenings and changes. You will receive information concerning changes in events outings and programs as they develop.  These announcements will be sent only when necessary.  Sign up by emailing the webmaster with the email address you want the bulletins sent.

The APAS apologizes for any inconvenience concerning our count data not being publicly posted at  HMANA's Hawk Count website.  This should be a temporary situation and we ask your patience in this matter.  The Hawk Watch is open and operating.  As always, we welcome anyone to visit the hawk watch and participate in the migration count.

Thank You Walmart Foundation for the generous donation to the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society.  We appreciate the help maintaining our facilities and funding our programs.
