Important Anouncements from the APAS...

The Spring Raptor Migration Count has ended at the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch!!

The Allegheny Front Watch site is now closed for the summer.  We will begin the Fall raptor count at the end of August.  We ask that the general public not enter the watch site when it is closed.

The results of our hawk migration counts are posted on HMANA's hawcount.org website.  Click this link to see reports of our migration counts at hawkcount.org.

We have developed a bulletin board for members to post topics and announcements.  We can post bulletins about any news or happenings and discuss topics we feel are important.  Click here to view the APAS Bulletin Board.  Anyone is welcome to view the topics. 

If anyone would like to post events ideas and outings of other groups on on our website, email the webmaster and I will announce them on the bulletin board.  Check out the bulletin board for these occassional postings.Tom is going to post reports of what he has seen and counted at the Wetlands this Spring.  Check out these posts on the "Tom's Nature Notes" forum on the bulletin board.

Date TBA - Astronomy Field Trip -   UPDATE as of 6/1/09  Outing is scheduled for June 15 to 19th (TBA).   Astronomy outing with Steve Limbaugh, this outing date/time will be selected on basis of the clearest day between 15th and the 19th for observing the planets and constellations. Telescopes will be available!  Get on the list by contacting Dennis McNair at 255-4088

June (Date TBA) - Hiking Charles Lewis Natural Area - This is an extremely interesting location in the Conemaugh Gap, home to interesting plants, mammals (Pa. Woodrat), and reptiles such as timber rattlesnakes and copperheads. The emphasis of this trip will be on the rattlesnakes. We will meet 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot. Directions will be provided at meetings or via e-mail for participants who signed up. Jim Pemberton is the naturalist for this outing.

July 12 - Butterfly Count - This is a new event listing.   Everyone should notify Tom of their intent to join in on this count.  It actually produces the largest number of species in the 100 or so counts in the NorthEast.  This is our local butterfly count conducted as part of the North American Butterfly Association's Annual Butterfly Count.  Tom and Sally Dick are the local coordinators of the count.
 
Dragonfly Outings (all summer)—Open to anyone interested, great learning experience.  This is a weekly event where dragonflies are assessed at the ever-changing Dunnings Creek Wetlands.   If interested please contact Dennis McNair at 255-4088.

Moth Lighting at Night:  Another way to appreciate biodiversity— setups will be at Hidden Acres Farm.  You will probably see moths taken by bats as they come to the lights.  You’ll see a wide variety of insects. Contact Dennis to sign up.
