For over 20 years, Dave Darney has been banding owls at the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch

We will be owl banding some Friday and Saturday nights in October and the beginning of November at the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch. October 13, 2023 will be the first night of the season. Always check the weather, the Twitter Feed on the homepage of this website, as well as our Facebook site (Allegheny Front Hawk Watch) before coming out. If owling is in progress, the gate will be open. If the gate is closed, then owling is not occurring. Never enter the property when the gate is closed.

Saw-whet Owl Banding

The primary objective of owl banding is to provide data to answer questions about Saw-whet Owl migration. Recapturing an owl that has already been banded gives history to the owl and provides scientists with information that would otherwise remain hidden in the night.

If it is your first time owling, volunteers who sit along the lane going into to the Allegheny Front Hawk Watch will be there to assist you. Follow their instructions and listen carefully to Dave and hopefully you will have a transformative experience.

Dave Darney has an unexpected guest in a Long-eared Owl. This very large owl is processed like any other owl.
